Buy, Hold, Sell — Round 8

It was an up-and-down week for many coaches this week, with lots of rookies scoring well but some popular premos not quite reaching the heights we would have hoped for.

The injury wave has rolled in again as well, this time after all the games had been played with some major injury news dropping yesterday evening.

Let’s have a look at our buy, hold and sell options for this week.

Buy

Jordan Ridley
Ridley has plummeted in price on the back of his concussion-affected game and then a couple of scores in the 80s, so $488K for a guy still averaging 104 despite those scores is great shopping. If you’ve been leaving a spot for him in your defence, you could jump on him this week or even wait one more week given his breakeven is still 119.

Rowan Marshall
The Saints look to have turned the corner and it’s no coincidence that it’s on the back of this guy and Paddy Ryder returning to the team. If he stays fit, he looks like the great forward buy we thought he’d be at the start of the season.

Josh Kelly
Kelly is on the up after back-to-back tons. The return of Lachie Whitfield seems to have changed his role and he’s playing more as a pure midfielder, attending 69% of the centre bounces against Essendon. The only drawback is a sticky Round 12 bye, but if you’ve got enough players for that round he’s a smart buy at just $511K.

Caleb Poulter
The Pies rookie hasn’t looked at all out of place at AFL level thus far, putting up two solid SuperCoach scores in his two games to date. His dual position status looks to be a handy bonus as well and could open up a swing set with the likes of Scott and Brockman.

Riley Collier-Dawkins
Didn’t have a great game against the Cats, his disposal efficiency was down slightly and a couple of clangers limited him to a modest score. Should stay in the side for a while now that Shane Edwards went down with an ankle injury.

Ryan Byrnes
Another midfield rookie option this week, Byrnes has put up two good performances to push his breakeven down to -40. The only things to consider are the Saints have a tough fortnight coming up (Geelong and Bulldogs) along with his relatively low TOG % compared to the rest of the team (third lowest vs GCS).

Hold

Shai Bolton
Would have been in the ‘buy’ section this week, but then the news broke last night that he’ll miss the next 2–3 weeks after involving himself in a nightclub skirmish. SuperCoaches and Richmond fans alike would be disappointed and if you just recently traded him in you’ll likely have to hold and hope he only misses a fortnight.

Nathan Murphy
Has already been ruled out this week with concussion, so you’ll need to relegate him to the bench for now. Hopefully he only misses one week and then comes straight back in, but it’s less than ideal for a rookie who is still trying to cement his place at AFL level.

James Rowe
It’s too late for those who have already traded, but we saw the good Rowe this week with an 81 against Port Adelaide. With Ned McHenry getting knocked out and Shane McAdam also injured, I can’t see his spot being in jeopardy this week so hopefully he can have another good game against West Coast.

Beau McCreery
Had a quiet game against the Roos with just 33 SuperCoach points, but a team-high 6 tackles suggests the Pies could stick with him. But even so, probably not a rookie I’d be playing on field if you can help it.

Sell

Taylor Walker
I said not to hit the panic button on him last week, but the cliff has come quickly for Tex. Adelaide have reverted back to what we saw from them last year and and his form is suffering as a result. Look to flip him to a genuine premo and congratulate yourself if you collected some of his monster scores.

Errol Gulden
Lots of coaches have jumped off already but there’s still 90K or so who still have Gulden in their side. He’s well and truly hit the wall now in terms of cash generation so time to move him on.
